Technology, Boredom, and Decision Management

With the advances of technology we have made the things we want to do very easy. Communicating, purchasing, writing, viewing, etc. are all so easy to do. We can watch a screen and move our hands a little bit and accomplish just about anything. The problem arises when we have to decide what to do.

2009 Recap

I covered 2008 previously, which was a pretty big year for me. Turns out 2009 did not disappoint.

Change was of course another big theme in my year. I had not really intended it to be, but it was no surprise. Here are the big things that happened to me in 2009:

Real SEO Help for Non-Web People

This is mostly a response to Derek Powazek’s piece about being fed up with crap SEO. Please read it first and come back. I found it via Merlin.

I’m a recent hire into the Internet Marketing world.

Tyranny of the Minority

I am a big fan of the pure democracy. I don’t think it ever really works in the sense that people would like it to, but it is hard to argue with the results of an untainted vote.

Should I have done that?

I am very guilty of having what-if thoughts. I used to have many more, but there are still some that irk me. These types of feelings come about when we make a decision and take a risk. Life is all about these decisions, and it would be dumb to assume you could make all the right ones all of the time. When the risk pays off, we rarely go back to recount it. But when things don’t quite work out, we have some trouble.

Truly creative individuals

I recently finished reading Merlin Mann’s epic on the new niche and how piss-poor the current ethics of web attribution are. It is a long read (with long sub-reads to precede it), but I highly recommend it. Things are pretty shitty in that area and only seem to be getting worse.

Consider the source…

Meg shared with me this article from Fashionista concerning fashion compliments. They talk about how a compliment from someone more important in the fashion world is much more valuable or desired than from a friend. The core of this aims to see if the source of a compliment changes the way a compliment is accepted.

Why Millennials struggle for jobs

I was recently exposed to this MSN article by @eschipul on twitter. It talks about why some twenty-somethings are struggling to find jobs. As a twenty-something who is looking, this subject is fresh in my mind. From my standpoint there are two influencing factors aside from the current economy. One factor is based on psychological issues and the other on facts. Facts first.

2008 Recap

Meg handed me a pen and paper to write down my recap of bests (and some worsts) of 2008. I wrote a bit, and after having trouble reading my own handwriting, I decided it was better to crack open the macbook and do this the right way. So, here was my 2008.

An everlasting flyer…

I came across a post today from Church Marketing Sucks about spending $5,000. In it, they talk about two ideas for marketing handouts. The first is handing out flyers or stickers that point you to a website. The second is to stamp your website on a $1 bill and hand that out to someone in need.

The Future…

I saw a comedian recently who was talking about the future. He was upset, because the future we were promised as kids (flying cars, jetsons, etc.) has not really happened. So, how are we to know when we reach the future if tech isn’t that indicator he asked. His answer was a Black President, because according to TV, that will happen in the future.

Maybe technology is cyclical

On episode 106 of 30 Rock (Jack Meets Dennis), Liz’s bf Dennis is the Beeper King, the last beeper salesman in NYC. He tries to market his beepers to Liz’s co-workers and only Frank wants one (to use as an ironic accessory). Of the many jokes made about the beepers, Dennis tries to explain to Liz that beepers are making a comeback because “technology is cyclical”.
