Colophon
This is the fifth iteration (and URL) of web content by me, JMO. It was launched in June 2010 on Wordpress 3.0.
Seth Godin doesn't do comments. Adactio thinks they don't work either. Jeff Atwood thinks a Blog isn't a Blog without comments. But this isn't a blog, it's my place to publish thoughts, ideas, and anything I want.I feel the comments on a website are essentially a big waste. 90% of them are SPAM which is a big pain to deal with. So we made a way for a person to prove to a machine that they are a person. Great, but now we even have people who are people who are spamming. So, spamming is problem 1.
Problem 2 is that the point of comments should be about creating a conversation, but this doesn't really happen. On my old site I got very few comments. Most of the time it was from people I talked to everyday. They probably could have just told me their 'comment' in a real-life conversation. And then I had to go activate it to prove that it wasn't spam and so on.
Problem 3 is for sites that get too many comments. They don't get read, a lot of it is bitching, and this made up conversation that is supposedly happening isn't really helping anyone.
So, for all of my stuff, I encourage you to Contact me with a link to the thing you want to comment on and I will add your comment to the real piece, and possibly post a reply if necessary. You can also feel free to comment on it on Twitter or Facebook or on your site. Hopefully, this will lead to us having a real conversation that leaves upvotes and signatures in the dust.
Content Licenses
My content licensing is very simple:- Content not specifically licensed The license is just Creative Commons Attribution 3.0. This means you can remake it, sell it, and pretty much do whatever with it so long as somewhere there is some mention of me and my original work. I want to encourage people creating new things, and I don't want to lock down ideas I've had that I may have abandoned.
- Content licensed individually If something I've made has it's own license mentioned in the content, then that license overrides the generic Attribution. In the event that I have a really good idea that I want to use, but still want to share, then I may use this. This may not be a Creative Commons license.
Previous Versions
V4 was jmoswalt.com, in existence since August 2009 to June 2010. It was a custom theme based loosely off of Manifest.V3 was therealjmo.com, which was around from 2008 to August 2009. It used the Hemingway theme, then was switched to Simpla.
V2 was jmoment.com (one of my favorite URLs). The content ranged from a series of MeToday videos (made private now, though still viewable on viddler) as well as thoughts on office life during my time at Accenture.
V1 was at itsnotmyshow.com and was a mix of tweet-like updates and video links from early 2006 to mid 2007. It used a template, however I did design a logo in true Web 2.0 fashion with gradients and reflections. I can still remember days in my college apartment tweaking little pieces of code just to see what they did. Little did I know where it would all lead.
Privacy Policy
If you send me a question or something on my contact page, I will not sell your information to anyone. I honestly wouldn't even know how to go about doing so.
I have Google Analytics installed on the site, and it tracks the pageviews and visits for the site. I occasionally share this information with other people, but none of it has personally identifiable details (like IP Address, email, or name). It does track location, which can be a bit of a signifier if you live in a remote area. Other than that small exception, I really don't have any way of knowing who visits this site (unless they tell me).
If you have any issue with the content on the site, the tracking, or any use of images/text/etc. that you feel is improper, please let me know.
