2011 Recap

My new favorite tradition at the end of the year is to do a recap and set goals and guesses. I recapped 2010 (2009, 2008) and made some predictions and goals for 2011 last January. Now it’s time to look back on 2011.

Losing Steve

In the late 90′s I became a gadget geek. It started with MP3 players. I had a rio and a nomad and several others. I didn’t really like any of them, and none of them were easy. In 2003 I sold a bunch of stuff on eBay to buy a third gen iPod. After a week, I realized that my string of upgrading was over.

2010 Recap

Another year, another recap. I covered 2009 previously, and now another year has passed.

Change was once again a big factor. While some people fear change, I gladly embrace it in my life because I know it will happen with our without my influence. Here are some of the big changes in my life in 2010.

Why we can have Nice Things

A review of all the things I have ever purchased fall roughly into three categories

  • Things that work very well
  • Things that are cheap
  • Things that are “best in class” but still don’t work well

I started in the cheap category. Most of that was based on the notion that I needed lots of things and couldn’t accomplish that by buying expensive stuff. From clothing to electronics, my disposable income was spent on crap. And for a while, I was OK with that. I had the time and energy to fix things, figure them out, shop for more, and all of the other energy-draining activities associated with using crap products.

* Finally Quitting Facebook

Facebook has boomed in the last year. New features, controversies, applications, and millions of new users. However, you can no longer count me in that group of people. Follow along as I detail my reasons for leaving the most popular social network of all time

Heres the problem

I love that phrase. Whenever someone asks for my help and starts out with “Here’s the problem”, I get excited.I know that they have a new puzzle for me to solve. I begin to focus intently on what they are describing, and all sorts of things start firing off in my head.

* 2009 Recap

I covered 2008 previously, which was a pretty big year for me. Turns out 2009 did not disappoint.

Change was of course another big theme in my year. I had not really intended it to be, but it was no surprise. Here are the big things that happened to me in 2009:

The Urge to Design Things

I am an engineer. I like to figure out how things work. I take things apart and put them together again (or sometimes not). I also like to make things.

The internet is a great place to make things. It’s also a great place to consume things. I’d say at my current standpoint I do much more consuming than making. I’d like to do a bit more making.

This day has a different feel for me

8 years ago today a crazy thing happened. It broke my personal mold of what I thought was possible, and really shook me. I was in Katy, TX at the time, but I felt right there.
